Ascent to the cottage

The tour to the highest top of range Appenzeller Alpen begins in community Unterwasser in altitude 906 asl. (meters above sea level). Behind a shop Intersport we go by the way direction to dry river basin, otherwise reboant brooks Santisthur. Come on into the forest, where the way divide itself. We go to the right to the village Halden. Passing few houses we continue direct to the mountain. After about half an hour we reach car park in a part called Laui. From there the marked way continues as  far as a hamlet Thurwis (1207 m).  Here the asphalt road ends and gravel road succeeds as far as challets Langebuel (1465 m). Here thaé way divides itself again. The left way leeds to the restaurant on west rip of  Säntisu. We follow the second one tas far as the challet Schafboden, where the wide way ends. By switchbacks we surmount grassy slope and after about 30 minutes from Schafboden we are in the saddle Rotsteinpass to the same called cottage (Berggasthof Rotssteinpass, 2120 m), which is already closed in this time. The cottage has no winterraum, that is why we have to built our tents for night. We can see fascinating sunset above Glarnisch Alpen and the range Chufirsten. We also have a good view of our tommorrow's target with the way over the edge Lysengrat, which we want to pass.

Over the ridge Lysengrat

The way was founded already in 1905 by a swiss alp club. We go up according to the signs from the cottage. We are navigated direct to sheer stand to the first summit of the ridge Chälbersäntis (2377 m). Behind it is belayed passage down to the bottom of the top pyramid. Next nice passage is along traverse again belayed with rope. Further we reach a plateau, where is the turning to the cottage Schafboden. The ridge succeed quite softly and by a wide way. One belayed passage we must surmount at the end and finaly we are on the top. 

Devastated summit

A giant transmitter (123 m), concrete complex of several restaurant and gift shops stand in the ascendent. But the real top is little higher. Here the old woden hut (old observatory from 1882) stands.  Also a funicular leads to the top. The upper station is in altitude 2479 m and its superelevation is 1125 meters. We descent more fast by the same way. Even the same day we descent as far as Unterwasser and drive home.
